Melvin Gordon has missed all of the Broncos off-season activities with a groin issue that has thrust Javonte Williams into the lead role.

As it was, Gordon was not all that happy that the Broncos spent a 2nd round pick on Javonte Williams in the 2021 NFL Draft. That is considered quite a high draft capital for a running back these days. Leading up to the beginning of preseason it seemed that Gordon and Williams were going to be a one-two punch at running back.
Gordon is a solid pass catcher with good speed while Williams has excellent one cut and go ability out of the backfield. Not to mention that Williams is fantastic forcing missed tackles in the open field. With Gordon missing all of the team’s preseason activities, it has allowed Williams to be the definitive RB1 on the team. In the first preseason game, Williams finished with five carries for 29 yards, a 5.8 yards per carry average. He also had a four-yard touchdown called back due to a holding call.
If Williams can perform at a high level this preseason, it will be very hard for Coach Fangio to keep him off of the field. Gordon could also easily look to be out of Denver, as he wants to lead the backfield. This is definitely a situation to monitor and I will provide updates to Gordon as soon as I can.
