David Montgomery suffered an ankle injury and will miss preseason action.
David Montgomery pulled up limp on his first carry of the preseason with an ankle injury. Montgomery was a fantasy darling in 2020, setting career highs across the board. With Tarik Cohen going down early with a torn ACL, Montgomery was able to show off that he could be a bell-cow running back. Christian Williams of Fantasy Pros breaks down in this Tweet how good Montgomery was as a pass-catcher in 2020:

Tarik Cohen is back and the Bears also signed Super Bowl star Damien Williams to provide relief to Montgomery.
Evan Macy of the Philly Voice reported that Montgomery suffered an ankle injury which will leave him sidelined for some preseason action (read the full article here). With Montgomery being the now high prized running back in Chicago, it is likely the last time we see him in the preseason. The coaching staff will take a cautious approach with their star and give the newcomers some time to acclimate to the offense.
Montgomery’s value was one of the hardest to gauge of running backs in the NFL. His rookie season was full of inconsistencies, but he was a star in 2020. This only clouds his value even more. Damien Williams and rookie Khalil Herbert should get some extra run for the remainder of the preseason. I will provide an update on David Montgomery’s status as soon as we hear more.
Update
The good news is that it does not seem that the injury to Montgomery is as bad as previously reported. Montgomery was spotted at practice today, though did not participate in 11-on-11 drills. Alex Shapiro of NBCS Chicago reported that Montgomery saw a few reps during the install portion of practice:
David Montgomery hasn’t taken any reps in 11 on 11 drills after getting a few reps during the install portion of practice.

This is great news for anybody who had high hopes for Montgomery for 2021. It looks like he will be fine for the regular season barring any setbacks.
