Washington Redskins 2019 7 Round Mock Draft

The Redskins go into 2019 looking to compete for the NFC East title. They added great talent through free agency so far. Now look to the draft to continue the talent acquisition.

The Redskins unfortunately lost their franchise quarterback for 2019 after Alex Smith broke his leg last season. They traded for Case Keenum, but he is only a stop-gap until they find their guy. Derrius Guice is due back this season after tearing his ACL in 2018, and they resigned Adrian Peterson so they are set at running back. It does not look like they are ready to give up on Josh Doctson yet. He has shown bits of promise but has trouble staying healthy.

Landon Collins was signed by the Redskins during the beginning of free agency. That was a huge pick-up for the Redskins but they still need to add another safety after Ha Ha Clinton Dix left for the Bears. The Redskins also picked up Reuben Foster off of waivers last year and as long as he can keep his nose clean than he and Mason Foster could make a nice duo in the middle. They still have Ryan Kerrigan on the edge and Jonathan Allen and Da’Ron Payne on the line. Lets see where the Redskins go in the draft.

Round 1, Pick #15 D.K. Metcalf, Wide Receiver- Ole Miss

The Redskins lost Jamison Crowder to free agency but are using last year’s Mr. Irrelevant, Trey Quinn, to take his spot in the slot. Josh Doctson has been spotty at best as a former first round pick. Last year’s “prize” free agent acquisition Paul Richardson seems to have been a bit of a bust signing. The Redskins need to add a difference maker in the receiving game to actually be competitive.

D.K. Metcalf proved that he is a real freak of nature athletically. I’m pretty sure that everybody has seen his combine numbers. Metcalf is 6’3 and 228 Lbs. and posted a 4.33 second 40 yard dash, 40.5 inch vertical, 134 inch broad jump, and 27 bench press reps. His shuttle drill has been ridiculed but if you actually watch it, there was a slip which caused his low numbers. Metcalf is instantly the best receiver on the team and is a great add at the 15th pick.

Round 2, Pick #46 Daniel Jones, Quarterback- Duke

Here is where the Redskins make their best pick of the draft. Daniel Jones is a starting caliber quarterback in the NFL. He has great size at 6’5 and 220 Lbs. and runs a 4.81 second 40 yard dash. Jones has amazing mechanics even if he only completed 59% of his college passes. Duke has never been known for having good pass catchers and dropped 38 passes during just the 2018 season.

This could easily be the Redskins quarterback of the future. He could play behind Keenum for the first year of his career and stay by Gruden’s side to learn. Gruden has always been good with quarterbacks and Jones’ mix of size and mechanics could make him the best one in the draft.

Round 3, Pick #77 Michael Jackson, Cornerback- Miami (FL)

Jackson has great size for a cornerback coming in at 6’1 and 214 Lbs. He is a very physical presence and excels in press coverage at the line. At the combine he ran the 40 yard dash in 4.45 seconds, had a 40.5 inch vertical and a 130 inch broad jump, If only his cover skills were as good as his athleticism should allow him to be. Jackson does, at times, get lost in coverage but with good coaching he may be able to put it all together.

In his two full years as a starter he posted a total of 85 tackles, 6.5 tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, 10 passes defended, and four interceptions. The four interceptions came in his first year as a starter. Jackson is worth it with his size to see if he can translate to the NFL. If it does not work out he can make a seamless transition to safety and play alongside newly acquired Landon Collins.

Round 3, Pick #97 Josh Oliver, Tight End- San Jose St.

Josh Oliver is a small school in line tight end with middle of the road blocking skills. His blocking ability has definitely gotten better, but he is regarded as more of a pass catcher. His Senior season he posted over 700 receiving yards while being basically the only target on his team. Oliver stands in at 6’5 and 249 Lbs. and ran a 4.63 second 40 yard dash. He has a great route tree as he hits every level and can kill the seams.

The Redskins currently employ Vernon Davis who will be great to learn from but is not getting any younger. They also have Jordan Reed but he is injured more often than not. With a team that has not shown a top pass catching threat, adding them at every level would be a good addition. It would also be smart to draft insurance to replace Jordan Reed.

Round 5, Pick #154 David Sills V, Wide Receiver- West Virginia

David Sills V is a red zone monster. He came to West Virgina recruited as a quarterback but after riding the pine and realizing he would never win the job he changed positions. During his Junior and Senior seasons he played full-time as a wide receiver and started 24 games. In those games he totaled 125 receptions for 1,966 receiving yards and an amazing 33 touchdowns.

Sills has good size at 6’3 and 211 Lbs. and solid good athleticism running a 4.57 40 yard dash. After the pitiful season the Redskins receivers had last season it would be wise to add pass catchers. So far, adding D.K. Metcalf, Josh Oliver, and David Sills V seems to be a good start and should help their red zone woes.

Round 5, Pick #174 Christian Miller, Edge- Alabama

The Redskins lost Preston Smith to the Green Bay Packers during free agency. They still have Ryan Kerrigan but they need to add some edge depth. Miller was only a full-time starter for one season at Alabama but played very well during that season. He was able to accumulate 34 total tackles, 11 for a loss, eight sacks, a pass defended and a fumble recovery.

Miller was a five-star recruit out of high school and was the Mr. Football of South Carolina going into college. Being on Alabama is the only thing that kept him from seeing playing time as he would have been a top edge rusher on any other team. With an open slot across from Ryan Kerrigan, Miller could start right away.

Round 6, Pick #208 Kendarius Webster, Cornerback- Ole Miss

Webster is a compact and athletic corner that should fill in the nickel corner spot for the Redskins. He stands 5’11 and 203 Lbs and runs a 4.43 second 40 yard dash, with a 43 inch vertical and 133 inch broad jump. His college career has not gone quite like he hoped as it has curtailed over the past two seasons.

After having 11 passes defended during his Sophomore season he totaled only seven over the next two seasons. Webster is a very strong tackler and can be very good in run support. He should be able to come in and compete for the nickel corner spot.

Round 7, Pick #255 Josiah Tauaefa, Linebacker- UTSA

The second year in a row the Redskins get to pick Mr. Irrelevant and for the second season in a row they may have found a gem. Last year they drafted Trey Quinn with the last pick of the draft and he is likely the starting slot receiver for the Redskins this year. Josiah Tauaefa is insurance if Reuben Foster cannot keep his act in line and if Shaun Dion-Hamilton does not take the next step.

Tauaefa was a tackle machine in UTSA  having totaled over 100 tackles in multiple seasons. In the two full seasons he played in he totaled 226 tackles, 20.5 tackles for a loss, 10.5 sacks, one pass defended, one interception and a forced fumble. He is a high energy player and is a great upside pick for the final pick of the draft.

Summary

The Redskins revamp the receiving corps to try to help Case Keenum out. They add combine freak-show D.K. Metcalf in the first round, Josh Oliver at tight end in the third round, and red zone monster David Sills V in the fifth. They also draft their quarterback of the future in Daniel Jones out of Duke and he could possibly be starting by the end of the season.

On the defensive side, they add two cornerbacks in Michael Jackson out of Miami who has great size and potential but needs to put it all together. They also grabbed Kendarius Webster from Ole Miss to man the slot position for the team. Then in the fifth they draft Preston Smith’s replacement in Christian Miller who can be a difference maker. Last, but not least, they grab Josiah Tauaefa out of UTSA as Mr. Irrelevant as a tackle machine and linebacker depth. The Redskins get better now and for the future.
