Why Are Positions Changing? (The Basics)
These position changes are inevitable in most IDP setups. Every year owners do their best to predict some of these changes to maximize value and construct their roster with the balance or imbalance they prefer. This is especially important in dynasty leagues and keeper leagues where players carry over year after year, but it is also important to understand the concepts and possibilities before entering a redraft IDP league.
Position changes usually occur when teams change defensive schemes or players move to a team that runs a different scheme. Changes are also possible if teams decide to utilize players differently, recent examples include Vic Beasley moving from DE to LB and back to DE and Tavon Austin from WR to RB and back to WR.
This is the first round of changes that has taken place this year, but it definitely will not be the last. There is still some unknown regarding the exact scheme(s) some teams will utilize and how Rotoworld will set the depth charts.
The Rotoworld depth charts are utilized by MyFantasyLeague to set the final position designations. We are also still in the midst of free agency, have the NFL Draft upcoming and other possible transactions like trade.
MyFantasyLeague is one of the most popular platforms for heavily customized leagues and is very popular for dynasty leagues as well, if you are playing on a different platform it is possible that the changes will occur at another time or may be applied completely differently.
General Position Change Value Rules
Generally pass rushers cannot compete with off ball linebackers in terms of fantasy points scored. This devalues most EDGE players that are designated as linebackers.
In DT specific leagues, there’s generally a lack of quality options at the top of position. So when a player like Aaron Donald or Chris Jones gets a DT designation where they vastly outperform the rest of the position, it is usually a positive for their value. If they move back to defensive end, the elite players remain valuable but do not provide the same huge disparity over the rest of their position group.
Good for Value
- EDGE moving from LB to DE
- DE getting DT designation (DT specific leagues)
Bad for Value
- EDGE moving from DE to LB
- DT getting DE designation (DT specific leagues)

Final Note
Again, please note these are general rules and the important thing is that you understand the changes and how they impact your roster relative to your specific league settings. If your league uses an EDGE designation that groups DE and pass rushing LB, a lot of these changes mean very little.
If your league groups all defensive lineman together, some of the changes mean less. The changes here are specific to leagues run using the default MyFantasyLeague position designations, so make sure you understand how and if this impacts other platforms that you may be playing on.
So please do your research and understand the changes in context before making any big changes. If you need further help understanding how this impacts your team and players please reach out to me or anyone at IDPguys.
