Myles Garrett continues his ridiculous season

The Monster

Monday Edition

Welcome to “The Monster”, now in audio format! This week we’ll be doing what we do every week, looking at everything that matters with every single IDP relevant player on every single defense, every week all season, and never behind a paywall. Now available before waivers run.

We’ll look at playing time, production, injuries and waivers because of them, changes in role or demotion (Daniel Sorensen, Jaylon Smith, etc) and we’ll follow the ebbs and flows of the season in an effort to make sure you have the best IDP producers starting for your defense every week and don’t miss any crucial information.

If things didn’t go how we thought they would we’ll try and figure out why that was, if someone we’ve never heard of went off for a massive week we’ll find out if they’re worth picking up on waivers or if they’re just barely playing and just lucked into a sack or splash play and it likely won’t happen again any time soon. We’ll follow up on weird or iffy situations with information from beat writers and whatever else I can find to connect the dots.

We’ll also use information from sources such as PFF, NFLGSIS, Pro Football Reference, and from other smart people in the IDP community as well. If I can’t get the answer I’ll go find it. This is the one place you can come every single week and learn everything you could possibly need to know in regards to all things FFIDP and by the end of the audio, you’ll know what you need to in order to make the best decisions for the upcoming matchups.

Between this article & audio, @Mike_Woellert and his three-down linebacker article, listening to The IDP Show podcast and the various information published weekly from our site (idpguys.org) and other excellent FFIDP sources out there (Gary Davenport, Gary Van Dyke, Justin Varnes, Jon Macri, The IDP Show, 4 for 4 IDP, etc) you should be completely locked in for your individual defensive players across the board. If you’re short on time though my mission with this content is to get “all of it in one place” so this is a good start. Remember the “why” is just as important as “what” so with all that in mind let’s get into it.

The Week 9 Questions

Jets @ Colts

We got it started Thursday night with the Jets and Colts in Indy. On the Indy side of things, what did their safety corps look like after Khari Willis (S) was sent to IR along with Julian Blackmon (S) as well? What did Kwity Paye (DE) look like after a down week against the Titans and was it Bobby Okereke (LB) or Darius Leonard (LB) as the better inside linebacker producer this week?

For the Jets we’ll look at the inside linebacker situation once more and see if there was any movement for that position next to CJ Mosley (LB) that is in question, beyond that was Ashtyn Davis (S) able to bounce back? Plenty to look at here.

Browns @ Bengals

The battle of Ohio played out early Sunday afternoon with the Bengals and Browns in a divisional showdown. Cleveland got the ship back on course and we got a chance to see a healthy Denzel Ward (CB) for the first time in a minute, how did he look in an ideal matchup against the pass-happy Bengals?

Beyond that, we’ll give this defense a once over but we’re basically just waiting for the return of Jeremiah Owusu Koramoah (LB) to see how that affects Anthony Walker (LB). For the Bengals, this defense is pretty set in stone as well but we’ll see whatever there is to see this week.

Broncos @ Cowboys

After that, we’ll look at how the Broncos did with their trip to Dallas to take on the red-hot Cowboys. They did well. For the Broncos this gives us a chance to see if Baron Browning (LB) kept his playing time or if he was just a short-term holdover until Kenny Young (LB) could get up and running.

As for the Cowboys, we’ll see what there is to see but the first inspection of the box score showed me basically everyone produced because this defense was on the field almost the entire game as Denver dominated from start to finish.

Texans @ Dolphins

Then we’re down to sunny Florida for the Dolphins and Texans in a battle of who can lose and improve their draft stock? For the Texans, we lost Christian Kirksey (LB) to the short term IR so we’ll see if that meant Zach Cunningham (LB) crawled out of the grave like a zombie looking for brains or if it was Eric Wilson (LB) who was recently signed by Houston after being released from Philly.

On the Dolphins’ end of things, we’ll see what there is to see but this defense is one of the least set in stone defenses on the planet to the less time we spend there the better.

Falcons @ Saints

From there we head to New Orleans for the Saints and Falcons in another division matchup. While the Saints looked great with a backup against the defending world champs they looked horrendous against the lowly Falcons. This Saints defense is set in stone but we may have had an injury to Chauncey Gardner Johnson (S) so we’ll see what there is to find on that and anything else of note.

For Atlanta, the safety situation has been in flux recently so we’ll check that out and beyond that make sure everything looks good with the usual suspects here.

Raiders @ Giants

In the Big Apple, the Giants faced off against the Raiders this week. The Raiders difficult last couple of weeks got even worse as the Giants nipped them at the end, for these Raiders did we get the Maxx edition of Maxx Crosby (DE), or was it Min Crosby (DE) this week? How did the linebackers look and can we figure out who plays cornerback on this defense?

For the Giants, the only real movement recently has been at safety after Jabrill Peppers (S) went to IR, Xavier McKinney (S) has seen a bump in playing time since then and also in production, did that continue this week? And how did Tae Crowder (LB) look with Bernardrick McKinney (LB) at his heels?

Patriots @ Panthers

Down in Carolina the Panthers coming off their first victory in some time get a suddenly hot Patriots team. For Carolina it was the second week back for Shaq Thompson (LB), was he able to see more than the 60/70% of snaps he saw last week and how did that affect Jermaine Carter (LB)?

Was Jeremy Chinn (S) able to give the people what they want and much more including a breakdown of that crowded cornerback corps? As for the Patriots, we’ll look at Kyle Dugger (S), Matt Judon (OLB), and a couple of other guys worth checking out. Then we’ll run for the hills away from this cursed defense.

Bills @ Jaguars

In Jacksonville, Urban Meyer left the bar and coeds long enough to coach a game this week with the Bills in town. Apparently, he was able to motivate his team enough to stun the Bills down in sunny Florida, truly wild.

For the Jags, we’ll look and see what there is to see but beyond the emergence of Dawuane Smoot (DE) there isn’t much to see here, not much to see on the Bills defense either, it’s the definition of consistency in terms of roles and playing time but we did get an injury to Taron Johnson (CB) so we’ll find out what we can about that.

Vikings @ Ravens

After that we head to Baltimore for the Ravens and Vikings, both coming off disappointing losses and looking to get the ship back on course. This one went to overtime and the Ravens were able to pull it out, this will give us another chance to see if Patrick Queen (LB) is back in the good graces of the defensive coaching staff or if it was Josh Bynes (LB) again this week?

As for the Vikings, we got a last-second inactive for Harrison Smith (S) who was a covid positive disqualification. Who will replace him this next game and beyond that how did the Danielle Hunter (DE) injury affect the pass rush here and is there a waiver move to be made because of it?

Chargers @ Eagles

In the city of brotherly love and greased poles during playoff runs, we got the Eagles and Chargers this week. The Chargers edged out Philly and we got a chance to see if Kenneth Murray (LB) truly did come back and play this week and if not now then when?

For the Eagles, with the demotion of Alex Singleton (LB) and the emergence of TJ Edwards (LB), did we get that again this week, or was that a one-off? How does the safety situation look since that’s been fluctuating recently and I thought I read about an injury to a well-known corner so we’ll check on that as well.

Packers @ Chiefs

Down in Kanas City, the Chiefs got the Aaron Rodgers (QB)-less Packers this week with an opportunity to get over .500 for the first time in a long time. This defensive struggle ended in a Chiefs victory and will allow us to check on things such as Kevin King’s (CB) first game back in several weeks and how the Chiefs linebacker situation shook out this week.

For the Chiefs’, safeties, was Juan Thornhill (S) able to give us anything in the box score? He’s been quiet since displacing Daniel Sorensen (S). And we’ll see whatever else comes up with these two defenses as well.

Cardinals @ 49ers

The last afternoon game was the Cardinals and 49ers part two. Somehow the Kyler Murray (QB)-less Cardinals were able to not only win this game but do so comfortably. We apparently even got a Chandler Jones (OLB) sighting! We’ll have to confirm that and give the entire defense a check-up top to bottom.

As for the Niners, we apparently got Azeez Al Shaair (LB) back from injury this week and Dre Greenlaw (LB) was able to practice this week, but did he? And when will he be back? Plenty to check up on with that other inside linebacker slot for the Niners this week.

Titans @ Rams

The Sunday night game was the Titans at the Rams in Los Angeles. The Titans came out swinging and stunned the Rams on the big stage in front of the nation. For Tennessee we got Jayon Brown (LB) back, how much did he play, and did that do anything to David Long (LB)? Plenty to look at there. For the Rams was it Ernest Jones (LB) again this week or was it Troy Reeder (LB)?

Who played how much and who is the better bet as a waiver wire linebacker rest of the season? We also got Darious Williams (CB) back from IR this week, did he immediately slide back into that second cornerback slot or are they easing him back into the lineup? Plenty of important questions for the Rams defense this week.

Bears @ Steelers

We wrapped up week nine with the Bears and Steelers in Pittsburgh. Two pretty stable defenses, not much to see here beyond the injury shenanigans for Chicago. Was Khalil Mack (OLB) able to play? What’s going on with Eddie Jackson (S) (skidmarks) and if he wasn’t able to go was it Deandre Houston Carson (S) again?

Was there any movement between Alec Ogletree (LB) and Danny Trevethan (LB)? For the Steelers, we’ll give them a once over and see what there is to see but much like the Bills this defense does the same thing most weeks and usually, it works out well.

All that and more in this Week 9 edition of the (audio) monster. Every single team’s IDP relevant playing time, changes in role or position, demotions, promotions, injury news and waivers, notes from beat writers mixed with rants about IDP strategy from a guy who’s been doing this entirely too long.

Come join me as we explore the land of individual defensive players and all the wonders of this degenerate wing of fantasy football. Let’s get into it.
