Early 2021 Super Flex Quarterback Shakeups

It’s been quite the crazy start to the offseason, and we’re barely even out of February! Several big name quarterbacks have been traded. More are rumored to be on the move. Let’s analyze what this all means to the quarterback position in your SuperFlex leagues.

Matthew Stafford – Los Angeles Rams

The first big move came from Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams who acquired Matthew Stafford from the Detroit Lions in exchange for Jared Goff and multiple draft picks (‘22 1st, ‘23 1st & ‘21 3rd). Stafford has officially become my favorite super flex pick of the early season. This is a man who threw for 5,000 yards….on the Detroit Lions!! Now he gets offensive whiz kid McVay and a big time upgrade in offensive weaponry. Not to mention, a real defense. Now, a good NFL defense could potentially hinder Stafford’s fantasy stats. However, I think the Rams will score early and often and Stafford easily has top 12 QB upside this year. You can have him as your 2nd QB in superflex startups at a reasonable price…for the moment.

I’d rather have Stafford instead of: Kirk Cousins, Carson Wentz, Derek Carr. Rating: BUY

Jared Goff – Detroit Lions

Jared Goff goes to a rebuilding Detroit Lions team with a new coach, new OC, and new system to learn. Like Stafford before him, the Lions defense still stinks. That may be his saving grace this year in fantasy. Talking major garbage time production folks. However, I am still bearish on Goff considering he could not string together consistent fantasy performances during his time in L.A. and I don’t think things get any better in Detroit. My rating is a hold, simply because trading him now likely won’t fetch you much value. If he starts out of the gate going gangbusters, THEN is the time to sell. Like immediately. If he is the QB1 or a QB1 after week one somehow, DO NOT WAIT SELL IMMEDIATELY. Check out where I have Goff in my latest superflex rankings.

I’d rather have these QB’s instead of Goff: Daniel Jones, Baker Mayfield, Matt Ryan. Rating: HOLD

Carson Wentz – Indianapolis Colts

WHOA BABY. As a Philadelphia Eagles fan, let me just say I am happy this shit show has finally come to an end. Carson gets the change of scenery he seemingly desperately needs based on what we saw last year. He gets major upgrades at offensive line and offensive weapons. Will this result in Wentz returning to his 2017 MVP caliber level of play? Beats me, literally flip a coin. Nobody knows. There is no in between with this guy.

He is either the worst starting quarterback in the league, or he absolutely will return to his 2017 self being reunited with Frank Reich. Well, I’m not afraid to tell you that I have no fuggin clue. I lean towards the optimistic side that Carson will put up significantly better fantasy numbers than Philip Rivers did last year. But if he falls flat on his face, I wouldn’t be terribly surprised either. This is why he receives a hold rating. I certainly wouldn’t be enthusiastic to go out and offer significant resources to acquire Wentz in superflex leagues. I also wouldn’t mind just hanging on for the ride. There will be lots of victory lapping depending on what happens with Wentz this year, but trust me, none of us really know anything.

I’d rather have Carson instead of: Tua Tagovailoa, Jared Goff, Baker Mayfield. Rating: HOLD

Jalen Hurts – Philadelphia Eagles

Now here is an opportunity for Jalen Hurts to take a humongous step forward in both his NFL career and fantasy rankings. Many people are bullish on him, considering he was a fantasy league winner for many players at the end of the 2020 season. Hurts’ rushing ability is the cheat code that has him ranked in the top 5-6 QBs for some heading into this year (I’m not quite as aggressive, but still bullish). Despite the Eagles lack of receiving weapons, Hurts threw for 300+ yards in 2 of his 4 starts. That’s simply amazing along with 350+ yards and 3 rushing TDs on the year.

He has some accuracy concerns, but hopefully he’ll work on that throughout the offseason. The Philadelphia Eagles defense should be terrible this year, as many veterans are expected to be cut or traded to help Howie Roseman dig out of his salary cap catastrophe. This means great fantasy game scripts and garbage time points galore should be in store for Jalen Hurts. The Eagles have wiped the coaching slate clean and Hurts will be learning a new system from a new coach and new OC. With his skill set, this shouldn’t impact his fantasy ceiling. Much like $GME before the suits began their cheating ways, Jalen Hurts is a BUY with infinity rocket ships to the goddamn moon. ????????????????????????

I’d rather have Hurts instead of: Matthew Stafford, Kirk Cousins, Carson Wentz. Rating: BUY

Deshaun Watson – Houston Texans???

I, for one, am rooting for Deshaun Watson to get the hell out of dodge. Brett Farve (shout out Topps Stadium Club) can shut the hell up! The Houston Texans organization is approaching Cleveland Browns/Cincinnati Bengals level stupidity of franchise management. Andre Johnson has said it, they waste their superstars’ best years. Watson doesn’t deserve it. The Carolina Panthers are rumored to be one of the teams targeting to trade for Watson.

Holy offense batman, if that were to happen, my goodness…even Ian Thomas might be a buy! Not to mention D.J. Moore, Robby Anderson, and Curtis Samuel all would be big time winners. Watson himself, with all those weapons, might easily become the consensus #3 superflex QB behind Mahomes and Josh Allen. I think the Panthers would be the dream scenario for both Watson and fantasy superflex players. But honestly, literally any franchise not named the Houston Texans would be an upgrade for the star QB. Keeping my fingers crossed that Watson deservedly gets what he wants.
