Identifying the right time to buy and sell players is a huge dynasty edge. So who are the top dynasty edge buys and sells? Let’s talk about four of each!
Locking down the edge position with studs in dynasty leagues can keep you locked in as a long-term contender. Losing that value with players can torpedo your roster. So knowing when the right time to hit on your Dynasty Edge Buys and Sells is key to extending your team’s longevity. Who are the top targets to get? Who should you be looking to move off?
Players to Sell
Jonathan Greenard, Minnesota Vikings
We’ll start with a solid player who turned a great year into a good contract with the Vikings if you don’t want to sell a 12.5-sack player still in his prime. At just 27 years old, Greenard could continue to put up solid numbers. Among players who posted so many sacks, though, his numbers are not as interesting.
Just don’t be surprised if this year he regresses towards eight sacks and hovers between that and 12. He won his rushes at just a normal 12.8% rate, and just 12.4% in true pass rush sets. That’s pretty similar to George Karlaftis, who is fine but unspectacular. Don’t need to sell but if you can get a better player than that for Greenard, you should do it.
Montez Sweat, Chicago Bears
Similar to Greenard, Sweat posted a solid sack total with less spectacular pass rush metrics. Another guy with 12.5 sacks who looks like that may be near his peak, Sweat was at just a 12.7% pass rush win rate with a less than stellar 9.1% true pass rush win rate.
Those numbers align more with Calais Campbell and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka so just be careful expecting continued elite production. Similar to Greenard, he can be sold to get a player with similar production but better underlying numbers. Some of the buys could probably be had, maybe with a plus too.
Harold Landry, Tennessee Titans
Just like the above two, Landry posted double-digit sacks but just a 10.3% pass-rush win rate and an 11.5% true pass-rush win rate. His numbers align a little better production-wise. I see all three pretty similarly as guys who can post solid edge 2 numbers but I’d rather as my third edge. A fine player to roster but would rather sell up for consistent production.
Kayvon Thibodeaux, New York Giants
My biggest sell by far from the foursome is Kayvon Thibodeaux. Similar to the above guys, they outperformed their underlying metrics. He won his pass rush at just a 6.4% rate and 10.6% in true pass rush sets. These are some terrible numbers, but he’s still valued at a super high level by many due to solid draft capital and perception, along with good second-year sack numbers.
He’s more likely to regress this coming year, even with Brian Burns opposite him. He’ll be similar to the guys above probably, but that’s nothing special at best. I’d happily sell out for Laiatu Latu or even some of the higher-ranking studs. If you can add something to him to get to the elite tier that’s a massive massive win for the selling team.
Players to Buy
Bryce Huff, Philadelphia Eagles
Talking about underlying metrics, know who’s are really good? That would be one Bryce Huff. The only thing that’s held him back is a lack of playing time, and that is about to change. After the Eagles dealt Haason Reddick, Huff is in line to play a lot and should be able to ascend toward 15 sacks.
Unlike the sells, Huff has really good metrics. Many may not have caught up to how good he could be in 2024. It’s possible Huff could post a top-12 edge finish in 2024 with his playing time. Yet he may well be on waiver wires in some leagues. Go get him as a throw-in right now and thank me later.
Dorance Armstrong, Washington Commander
Similar to Huff, Armstrong is a good part-time player about to ascend into a full-time guy. Armstrong should be viewed similarly to some of the sells, as his numbers are not all that different from guys like Montez Sweat or Harold Landry but I bet you dynasty managers won’t treat them the same in any manner of negotiations. Trade either for Armstrong and a pick and laugh your way to a title.
Jermaine Johnson, New York Jets
Do you know who else played a part-time role and was similarly productive in pass rush win rate but is still not viewed in such a manner? Jermaine Johnson. The only hesitation here is will the Jets let Johnson spread his wings or continue to rock a rotation and cap their top players’ production. Johnson could easily be better than Sweat and Landry too, especially with Reddick now on the other side.
Rashan Gary, Green Bay Packers
The final player in this article is Gary, who despite coming off an ACL last year and barely having time to get ready in the preseason, posted an impressive nine-sack season and feels due to eclipse 10 for the first time in 2024.
Gary, in his first season back, posted a 17.2% pass rush win rate. That was similar to his 2022 win rate which was top-ten among edges. Despite being at “just” 16th in 2023, he could easily ascend into the top-ten pass rushers as he gets back to full health. Buy cheaply now and enjoy the 2024 season and future value added.
