Here is a look at the top 20 IDP fantasy football safeties from 2018 and IDP Dude’s prediction on who misses out during the 2019 season

2018 Top 20 Safeties

Now that we have our top 20 safeties from 2018 let’s take a look at who I think misses the list in 2019.

T.J. McDonald, Miami Dolphins

The Former Trojan made himself relevant by picking up the slack of Reshad Jones which landed him in the top 20 in 2018. McDonald as it stands now finds himself sandwiched between Minkah Fitzpatrick, who has already expressed his desire to play a fixed position in 2019 and incumbent starting safety Reshad Jones. We don’t know what the Dolphins plans are as of yet but it’ll be wise of them to fix Minkah at FS leaving some uncertainty as to how they will use Jones and McDonald. It’s even possible one of them might be elsewhere before the 2019 season starts which is why I can’t justify McDonald making it into the top 20 again in 2019.

Kareem Jackson, Houston Texans

Yes, I know what you’re thinking. Why is Jackson listed as a safety? Well in most fantasy leagues he was eligible and tagged as a safety and used in a variety of ways during the 2018 season, similarly to Damarious Randall and the previously mentioned Minkah Fitzpatrick. The soon to be 31 year old is on his way out of Houston and will certainly take most of his snaps as a CB wherever he lands essentially knocking him out of the top 20 safety list by default. The dude is a playmaker though, watch out!

Damontae Kazee, Atlanta Falcons

This one hurts me a little bit I won’t lie. The talent is awesome and his playmaking ability is awesome but his opportunity in 2019 won’t be as plentiful as it was in 2018. With both Ricardo Allen and Keanu Neal due back next season Kazee was the leading candidate to compete with Brian Poole for the slot CB gig but with breaking news as I’m writing this article, it appears the Falcons will let Poole walk leaving Kazee to man the slot corner role. We know Jones and Neal will gobble up the tackles and it’s possible Kazee will be tagged as a CB in fantasy leagues next season as he takes over for Brian Poole.

Tre Boston, Arizona Cardinals

Production by default was the name of the game in 2018 for Boston. Cardinals couldn’t sustain much offense leaving their defense with an abnormal amount of playing time. It also seems that Boston is on his way out as he becomes a FA and the asking price might be set far outside of what the Cardinals can currently afford to bring him back in 2019. This is a wait and see where he lands scenario so the uncertainty leaves him outside the top 20 for me in 2019.
