Welcome to the rest of the season / deep dynasty profile for the Texans’ Safety, Jonathan Owens.
Safety Jonathan Owens
Jonathan Owens is working off one and two-year contracts since signing with the Texans in 2019. He was undrafted in 2018 and has taken the NFL and Fantasy Football leagues by storm, averaging top 16 safety points per week in almost all IDP formats.
Owens had a hot start to the season’s first week, setting the pace high against the Colts with 11 solos and fifteen tackles in total. He led the Texans while making his first clear mark in IDP leagues with big ban.
On the season, after sticking as a top-five safety for the first few weeks, Owens has recorded 46 combined tackles in total, with two passes defended. So what if he’s not flashing interception or big splash play appeal? Owens is averaging nine total tackles a game, by default or not. And nowadays, that’s way above just being defensively solid.
Owens also earns his rights in NFL film and sports a valid on-par PFF grade, which his managers definitely have a right to get excited over. Especially considering hardly anyone had ever heard of him before this season.
I will also mention that Owens had the most valid form of a breakout and only had seven total tackles to his name in 2021. So as for the rest of this season, after the team’s bye week, Jonathon Owens will resume his breakout bid for a top defensive back position,
Our only real concern, as with any player taking those many shots, is can his body keep this pace up for the rest of the year. So we might be assuming a lot with Owens and any of these other higher-end performers that have shown up so far this season.
Dynasty Profile
If Jonathon Owens, who is technically a free safety, is continued to be put into a position to clean up the field all he wants, our call would be simple. We’d say he’s a top-10 option next year. Or should we consider that he really isn’t?
So far, Houston’s normal monster linebackers have been underperforming through five weeks. And there’s not that much other than edge rusher Rashad Weaver at least until Bud Dupree returns.
Owens’ dynasty value is a perspective. By the end of this season, with just five games under his belt, he will need to show managers exactly where we’ll gauge him in the dynasty heading into 2023.
Until then, if Owens is a DB1 in your leagues, you have all the wiggle room you want, Which you likely got for next to nothing. And that’s one of the best parts about playing IDP formats. Because how often can you find an undrafted deep “Dirty O” player sitting on the waiver wires? And the first week of the season?
And Owens wasn’t alone this year either. Ask Raven’s Marcus Williams and The Lion’s Deshon Elliott managers. But the one major difference? We could all see those possibly coming true., But only a few even knew about Jonathon Owens. Who basically showed up from out of nowhere early.
