The University of Tennessee 2022 Recruiting Class

The 2022 recruiting class for the Tennessee Volunteers may have gotten off to a slow start, but July brought them plenty of fireworks to celebrate with. Let’s see who committed to play for the Vols!

The 2022 recruiting class has been moving at a snail’s pace, but the pace seems to be picking up. The Vols only had six commitments as of June 30 but picked up six more commitments this month alone. With those commits, Tennessee is beginning to pick up the pace and has moved from outside the Top 50 to 36th in the latest 247 Sports Composite 2022 recruiting team rankings and 12th in the SEC.

There has been a much different approach with this coaching staff than in the past and there is still plenty of time for the Vols to continue to climb the rankings. Let’s take a closer look at who they have picked up recently.

Jordan Phillips

The 2022 recruiting class took off when the first of the five commits for this month, Jordan Phillips, a 3-star defensive lineman from Ocoee, Florida, committed on July 1. He ranks as the 91st best player in the state of Florida, but more importantly, at 6’2”/300 lbs, he has SEC-ready-now size. We all know how important the trench wars are and Phillips could be a solid piece in that chess match.

Phillips is a three-sport star (football, wrestling, and weightlifting) and, as a junior, he qualified for and finished as the runner-up for the 3A state wrestling tournament in the heavyweight division. In eight games on the football field, he recorded 71 tackles, 14 TFLs, 5 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles, and helped lead his team to the 8A State Playoffs.

Masai Reddick

The next player to commit in the 2022 recruiting class was 3-star OT Masai Reddick from Detroit, Michigan. He ranks as the 23rd best player in the state of Michigan. Like Phillips above, Reddick has SEC-ready size at 6’4” and 330 lbs. With some key losses upfront along our offensive line, he could be another key piece in helping Tennessee win the trench wars.

Reddick’s size should be able to help him play both inside and outside, along the offensive line. That said, he’s still a very raw prospect, so his development and progression are the next big key steps for him.

Marquarius White

Marquarius White is a 3-star WR from Pinson, Alabama. It’s always great when the Tide loses out on a local stud! White is ranked as the 21st best player in the state of Alabama and had a slew of offers from around the country, including Alabama, Auburn, and Georgia. As a junior for Clay-Chalkville High School, White had 44 receptions for 877 yards and 13 TDs.

Not only does White shine on the football field, but he’s a track star as well and has timed a 10.68 second 100 meters. With his speed and size (5’10”/155 lbs), the “Squirrel” as White has been nicknamed, is destined to be a slot receiver.

Maurice Clipper Jr.

Offensive tackle Maurice Clipper Jr. is a 3-star commit from Alpharetta, Georgia. He helped Milton High School reach the state quarterfinals as their starting right tackle. Currently, Clipper Jr. ranks as the 26th best offensive lineman and 63rd player in the state of Georgia. Many seem to believe he is ranked too low, which is a great thing for the Vols to possibly find a quality late bloomer.

Clipper Jr. has some athleticism for such a big man (6’4”/299 lbs), and he plays basketball as well. Along with Reddick above, the Vols quickly improved their depth at this position. Now we need to see that turn into quality as well.

Cameron Miller

Cameron Miller, a 4-star WR from Memphis, Tennessee, was the fifth commit for the Volunteers in a twelve-day span. He’s the highest graded of this group of five, as he ranks as the 14 best players in the state and 52nd overall. At 6’1″ and 195 lbs, Miller has good speed qualities, with a recorded 4.23 shuttle time at The Opening.

In 2019, Miller registered 21 catches for 361 yards and 3 TDs for Memphis Academy High School. He also had 651 rushing yards and 9 TDs, on 86 attempts. With offers from Alabama, Auburn, and Florida, keeping Miller away from those schools is just as important as keeping a stud like him home in Tennessee, where he belongs.

Kalib Perry

Linebacker Kalib Perry was the last commitment in July. Perry, from Georgetown, Kentucky, is ranked as a 3-star recruit by 247 Sports Composite. He is the 8th ranked player in the state and the 80th ranked player at the position nationally. In his time at Great Crossing High School, Perry played a combo of safety/quarterback for an option-heavy team.

Perry was experienced in both coverage and rushing off the edge on defense. However, at a recent UT camp, the Vols worked him out in a defensive line session. With a size of 6’3″ and 215 lbs, there are a number of position options available. However, with the team’s needs, they may slot him at linebacker in the beginning.

Walter Nolan

July was a hot month for Tennessee football recruiting. The Vols were able to address two of their bigger needs with the commitments at wide receiver and offensive line. All six are quality additions who will, at the very least, upgrade the depth chart. A nice recruiting surge for Tennessee ended with icing on the cake in WR Cameron Miller.

However, there is a bigger prize that would be the cherry on top of this class — 5-star DL Walter Nolan. Another in-state stud that the Vols are in the running for and desperately need to keep at home! Here’s to keeping the foot on the gas and making Tennessee football great again!
