The Bears were a missed field goal from defeating the Eagles in the playoffs in 2018. With another season of experience for Trubisky and Nagy’s offense the sky is the limit for the squad.

Cody Parkey’s missed field goal in the 2018 playoffs was a dagger to the hearts of Chicago Bears fans and players alike. Coach Nagy proved that his offensive scheme works well with his personnel. They spent a lot of draft capital in trading for Khalil Mack but in hindsight that seems like it is already paying dividends.

The Offense

Mitch Trubisky is the quarterback of the future and made great strides last season. The Bears also have a top of the line backup in Chase Daniel. The offensive line was spectacular in pass protection, ranking 7th in the NFL, but failed miserably in run blocking ranking 28th. The running back situation is intriguing as they Just traded Jordan Howard. Tarik Cohen produced beautifully as the pass catching back for the team and looks to be a top option again. The Bears signed Mike Davis to be their first and second down back after being quite productive as a backup in Seattle.

The Bears have two very capable pass catching tight ends in Trey Burton as well as last year’s rookie Adam Shaheen. Shaheen was injured much of last season but should be involved a lot more in the offense this season. At wide receiver they have former all-pro Allen Robinson looking to get back to form. Taylor Gabriel is a solid third option and Anthony Miller had a very promising rookie season.

The Defense

The Bears defense is one of the best, if not the best, defense in the league. At nose tackle they have Eddie Goldman who is a block absorber in the middle. Though he does not have eye-popping stats, his presence is definitely felt. Akiem Hicks is a highly productive 3-4 defensive end, having broken out in 2018. The Bears could add somebody to play on the other side of the line with him. At outside linebacker, they have probably the best in the league in Khalil Mack. On the opposite side is Leonard Floyd who has not made the leap that many expected out of him.

Roquan Smith is a top-tier inside linebacker as last year’s top choice for the Bears. He plays alongside Danny Trevathan who is highly talented but needs to stay healthy. Behind those two they have a capable backup in Nick Kwiatkowski who can step in and start if needed. The secondary is top-notch for this team. At slot they lost Bryce Callahan but replaced him with long time veteran Buster Skrine. On the outside they have possibly the best cover duo in Kyle Fuller and Prince Amukamura.

At safety the Bears recently acquired Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to replace Adrian Amos and Eddie Jackson has eight interceptions and five touchdowns in two seasons in the league. The Bears only have four draft picks this year after trading for Khalil Mack but luckily for them the team is already stacked.

Round 3, Pick #88 David Montgomery, Running Back- Iowa St.

Montgomery is a plus runner behind the line with great patience. He sets up his blocks beautifully and has above average vision and elusiveness. To boot, he is a very powerful runner, and always fights for extra yards. Montgomery has an NFL build and is probably the most NFL ready of any of the backs in this draft. Jordan Howard was just traded as his yards per carry dropped every season as the number one back in Chicago and could not catch either. Montgomery can step right in and win the number one job from Mike Davis and offer three down capability.

Round 4, Pick #127 Max Scharping, Offensive Tackle- Northern Illinois

Scharping does a great job at keeping his hands at chest level and extending into his opponents body. He does a great job against the bull rush and has the length and strength to keep edge rushers out of the play. Scharping can play either tackle position and can bolster the pass defense even more. With his upper body strength and athleticism I think that the running game can get somebody who can block at the second level.

Round 5, Pick #163 Renell Wren, Defensive Line- Arizona St.

Renell Wren is a physical freak on the line. He possesses an incredibly strong upper body with the lower body to match. Wren has great explosion and a super quick first step to attack gaps and get behind the line of scrimmage quickly. The only reason Wren drops to the fifth round is due to his lack of numbers in college.  His traits are too good to overlook, and adding him as a 3-4 defensive end with Akiem Hicks and Goldman in the middle, this line is fierce.

Round 7, Pick #224 Darius Slayton, Wide Receiver- Auburn

Darius Slayton has all the traits to be a productive receiver in the NFL. He has solid size measuring in at 6’1. His speed and burst is tremendous, having run a 4.39 second 40 yard dash at the combine while also possessing a 40.5 inch vertical. He does have inconsistencies in his hands though and is not the best ball tracker for somebody expected to be a deep threat. His routes are unpolished and has a tough time creating separation. With all that said his traits are too tantalizing to pass up on in the seventh round. Taylor Gabriel will likely be gone at the end of his contract and by that point Slayton may have more polish.

Round 7, Pick #240 Malik Carney, Edge- North Carolina

Carney is an undersized edge rusher that uses his hands to create his rush off the edge and also set the edge in the run game. He is very good at setting the edge funneling runners back inside. His hands are also very active while trying to strip the ball having forced nine fumbles in his college career. As a three year starter he also has 32.5 tackles for a loss and 17 sacks. Add Carney to the group of Khalil Mack and Leonard Floyd and he becomes a solid back up.

Summary

The Bears only had five picks to use but use them wisely. Their first pick did not come until the third round where they draft Jordan Howard’s replacement in David Montgomery. They follow that up in the fourth round by drafting offensive tackle Max Scharping to hopefully improve the team’s run blocking a bit. With their fifth round pick, my favorite pick, they grab a fierce defensive lineman to play opposite Akiem Hicks.

In the seventh the Bears select Darius Slayton who has the traits to be an eventual starter. Malik Carney is picked as their final selection top add to the edge depth with Khalil Mack and Leonard Floyd. The Bears make some great improvements through the draft and look to win the North again.
