Rashod Bateman left Ravens practice with “a significant groin pull” on Tuesday, August 10.

Jason La Canfora reported Tuesday night that Rashod Bateman suffered, what is believed to be, a significant groin strain during practice earlier in the day.

Bateman will receive more opinions to see the significance of the injury, though either way he is going to miss time, the question is how much.

Timetable for Return

A groin strain is the straining of the abductor muscle caused by turning quickly or jumping, any movements that cause your muscle to both lengthen and contract at the same time. In order for a groin strain to heal, it requires proper treatment and rest. A grade one strain, the best-case scenario, has a recovery time of 2-3 weeks. A grade two strain usually offers a recovery time of 2-3 months, and a grade three strain is three months or more.

Bateman’s injury is yet to be determined, but if there is anything we have learned from last year’s shortened preseason and camp, it is that younger players truly need this time to get acclimated to the NFL game speed.

Fantasy Impact

Anyone who drafted Bateman needs to be cautiously optimistic that this is a grade one strain. Though he is likely to miss time, we would hopefully return before the start of the season. If this injury stretches into the regular season, it could have a significant impact on Bateman’s chemistry with Lamar Jackson.

Though the receiving corps is still pretty thin, the Ravens have aspirations to make a deep playoff run. Playing a rookie who is having growing pains in-season may not be in the team’s best interest. This is something to monitor this moving forward. I will provide an update as soon as I hear the true significance of the injury. Until then, I would suggest you cross your fingers.

Injury Update

Per Baltimore Ravens Twitter, and Coach Harbaugh himself, Bateman’s groin will require surgery.

The news is less than stellar for Bateman’s outlook. The fact that the answer was “sometime in September ” leaves me worried that it could be later. If you drafted him, make sure you have a backup plan.
