The Oakland Raiders Are Hoping Their New Off-Season Additions Are The Key To Turning Their Defense Around, In 2019.
My series covering every NFL team continues with this article taking a look at the Oakland Raiders buys. I will be identifying players that I would consider adding ahead of the 2019 season. Also included will be my recommendations on what it might take to acquire these players.
Johnathan Hankins, Defensive Tackle:
Johnathan Hankins, 27, is coming off of his first season with the silver and black. He ended last season with 21 solo tackles, four tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits. This was all done over 14 games started and 15 games played. The Raiders just re-signed Hankins to a two-year contract, this off-season. Last season, Hankins was serviceable against the run, but struggled with his pass rush ability. With the new additions to this defense, I believe that’s going to open up more opportunities for Hankins pass rush. He makes a nice buy low, going into this season.
Fantasy Recommendation:
He should be available on your waiver wire. If Hankins can improve his pass rush I see his potential as defensive tackle three for 2019.
Honorable Mention: Arden Key, Defensive End.
Vontaze Burfict, Linebacker:
Vontaze Burfict, 28, signed a one-year contract with the Oakland Raiders, to reunite with longtime defensive coordinator Paul Guenther. Coming off of his worst season, since 2014, he ended last year with 16 solo tackles and one tackle for loss. He did this over seven games started, having been hindered by various different injuries. With the Raiders having one of the weakest linebacker corps, in the league, Burfict should play heavy snaps, this season. If he can stay healthy, his overall production should sky-rocket, making him a great buy low candidate.
Fantasy Recommendation:
There is a high likely hood Burfict is owned, but with his extensive injury history he could be had for a mid round pick. I see him with linebacker three potential.
Honorable Mention: Brandon Marshall, Linebacker.
Gareon Conley, Cornerback:
Gareon Conley, 23, is going into his third season, with the Raiders. He had a nice second season, finishing with 24 solo tackles, and 15 pass deflections. Conley played in 15 games and started 14 of them. Before Conley was ruled out with a concussion ahead of week 16, last season, he was the Raiders top cover cornerback. With him now healthy, I think he has a great chance to, once again, be the Raiders top cover cornerback, in 2019. Given his potential, he makes for a great buy low candidate.
Fantasy Recommendation:
He should be available on your waiver wire. I see Conley with cornerback four potential.
Honorable Mention: Karl Joseph, Safety.
Conclusion
If this defensive group can stay healthy, there is a lot of potential for increased production. Given the offensive styles that are in the AFC West, this defense should have plenty of chances to make plays. Ranking these buy-lows in order of priority, it would be, Vontaze Burfict, Gareon Conley, and Johnathan Hankins. Hopefully, you find these recommendations helpful in your quest to build that championship roster for 2019. Please keep an eye out for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Please note that when I say linebacker three or cornerback four potential, that is basing it off of a 10 team dynasty league.
