Taking a look at the NFL week 3 from a IDP perspective; notes on what our writer @Orangeman3142 saw this weekend.
This is a continuation of my weekly article series that breaks down what we say this week in IDP fantasy football. What happened and why, what we got right and what we got wrong and more importantly how to move forward and get better this week. We look at possible waivers and trends, snap counts and issues that effect production for your IDP team. Let’s break down part three.
Tennesse Titans @ Jacksonville Jaguars
Titans: Wesley Woodyard (LB) once again led the Titans in IDP production this week while playing 100% of snaps again. He put up 12 combined tackles, 1 sack, 1 TFL and 1 PD in another monster game. He’s an always start for me. Jayon Brown (LB) was the next best producer with 7 combined tackles and 1 TFL while only playing 67% of snaps. This is the first time I’ve mentioned him this year so I would steer clear until he’s a bit more consistent.
Kenny Vaccarro (S) had another nice game this week playing 100% of snaps and recording 4 solo tackles, 1 sack and 1 TFL. He has been a solid and consistent option at safety this year who also has the weekly playing time, pick him up without hesitation if you need help at safety.
Kevin Byard (S) had a dud but still played 100% of snaps so I would keep playing him he should be fine. Malcolm Butler (CB) had an ok game with 3 solo tackles on 91% of snaps played defensively. Against teams that throw more often he should be a good option at corner. Adoree Jackson (CB) got hurt in this game and had a dud because of it, he should be fine to plug in again once healthy.
Jags: Telvin Smith (LB) had the monster game with week while Myles Jack (LB) had a stinker. Both played 100% of snaps and Smith put up 8 solo tackles, 1 sack and 1 TFL while Jack only recorded 3 combined tackles. Both should continue to be automatic starts weekly despite Jacks dud this week.
Calais Campbell (DE) finally played the kind of game we expect from him after last seasons outstanding production. While playing 74% of snaps he put up 5 solo tackles, 2 sacks and 3 TFL. This is what was expected of him from guys who drafted him so it’s nice to see he’s starting to put it together.
Tashaun Gipson (S) and Barry Church (S) also had nice games with Gipson playing 97% of snaps while Church played 100%. Gipson recorded 6 solo tackles and 1 pd while Church put up 5 solo tackles. Out of the two Church is far more consistent and the option I would look at for waivers.
Marcel Dareus (DT) had a solid game as well while playing 68% of snaps and putting up 6 combined tackles and 0.5 TFL. He was a nice IDP defensive tackle last year but has started slow this season, if in a deeper league he may be a good option but personally I’m looking elsewhere for DT help.
Denver Broncos @ Baltimore Ravens
Broncos: Todd Davis (LB) had another nice game while Brandon Marshall (LB) continues to struggle with injury and playing time due to it. Davis played 72% of snaps while Marshall played only 46%. Davis recorded 8 combined tackles while Marshall only put up 2 combined tackles. Davis seems to be a decent option and has been consistent despite the less than ideal amount of playing time while Marshall now clearly is an avoid until completely healthy and back to his normal snap count.
Darian Stewart (S) led the Broncos in production with 9 combined tackles while playing 88% of snaps. Safety Justin Simmons (S) has been the more reliable of the two and recorded 5 solo tackles this week.
Von Miller (LB) had a dud and has always been hit or miss due to relying on sacks for the majority of his IDP production, if you want to start him you’ll have to accept weeks like this. Bradley Chubb (DE) had the first nice week of his young career with 2 solo tackles, 1 sack and 1 TFL while playing 69% of snaps. He’s still too inconsistent for my tastes.
Ravens: Kenny Young (LB) has been a solid replacement for CJ Mosley (LB) while he’s been injured. Young played 76% of snaps and recorded 10 combined tackles and 1 TFL. Brandon Carr (CB) played 100% of snaps and had the next best day with 6 combined tackles. This is the first time I’ve mentioned him though so I would steer clear until he shows more consistency.
Both Tony Jefferson (S) and Eric Weddle (S) had nice games while each played 100% of snaps. Weddle put up 5 combined tackles while Jefferson had 5 combined tackles and 1 TFL. Jefferson is the more consistent of the two and the one I would pick up for safety help.
New York Giants @ Houston Texans
Giants: Cornerback Curtis Riley (CB) led the Giants in production this week and played 100% of snaps but I would still rather have Janoris Jenkins (CB) who had 3 solo tackles and 1 PD and also played 100% of snaps and has been far more consistent of the two.
Damon Snacks Harrison (DT) had the next best game for the Giants this week with 7 combined tackles and 1.5 TFL while playing 51% of snaps. He has been in the top three of IDP defensive tackles for years now and remains an automatic start at the DT position.
Both Landon Collins (S) and Alec Ogletree (LB) had decent games with both playing 100% of snaps. Collins recorded 5 combined tackles and 1 PD while Ogletree had also had 5 combined tackles and 1 PD. These two are also automatic starts for me and despite the slow start this year I feel will end up with monster seasons when it’s all said and done.
Texans: Both of the Texans safeties, Tyran Mathieu (S) and Kareem Jackson (S) had great games with honey badger playing 100% of snaps while Jackson played 98%. Honey badger recorded 9 combined tackles and 1 PD while Jackson put up 9 combined and 1 PD as well.
JJ Watt (DE) finally did something productive this week with 8 combined tackles, 3 sacks and 5 TFL in a monster week while playing 84% of snaps. If he can avoid the injury bug he might actually be on track for a nice season.
Inside linebackers Bernardrick McKinney (LB) and Zach Cunningham (LB) continue to be steady producers with McKinney playing 87% of snaps while Cunningham played 73%. Bernardrick recorded 7 combined tackles and 1.5 TFL while Cunningham put up 6 combined tackles and 1 TFL. Both have been solid options at linebacker and should continue to be this season.
LA Chargers @ LA Rams
Chargers: Derwin James (S) continues to be incredible in his rookie season with a week three performance including 9 combined tackles, 1 pd and 1 int. He has played 100% of snaps in the first three games and is everything we thought he would be and more.
Denzel Perryman (LB) and Kyzir White (LB,S) also keep proving they are the linebackers to own on the Chargers with Perryman playing 77% of snaps while White played 78%. The next linebacker up only played 25% of snaps so these two are clearly the favorites.
Perryman recorded 10 combined tackles while White put up 7 combined tackles and 1 TFL. Either of them are solid waiver wire options. Desmond King (CB) continues to play 100% of snaps and had a better week with 5 combined tackles and 1 TFL. He remains a solid option at corner if you need help there. Melvin Ingram (DE) had an off week but still played 83% of snaps and remains an automatic start for me. You can’t win em all.
Rams: Linebackers Cory Littleton (LB) and Ramik Wilson (LB) put up solid numbers in another week without injured Marc Barron (LB) around to soak up all the production. Littleton played 100% of snaps while Wilson only played 67%. Cory recorded 10 combined tackles and 1 PD while Wilson put up 9 combined tackles, 1 TFL and 1 PD.
Littleton remains the more consistent of the two but I would avoid both when Marc Barron comes back from injury. John Johnson (S), Aaron Donald (DE) and Micheal Brockers (DE) all had dud games but have been solid all year (except Donald, who is due for a big game soon) so I’m not even close to abandoning ship yet.
N’Damakong Suh (DT) had his first nice game of the year while playing 92% of snaps and putting up 3 combined tackles, 1 sack, 1 TFL and 1 PD. This Rams defense is loaded with talent, IDP and otherwise, but it can be risky playing them since in two out of three games this year the starters have been rested from the third quarter onwards due to killing the team they were playing so badly.
So plan accordingly. Corners Aquib Talib (CB) and Marcus Peters (CB) both got injured but Talib is day to day while Peters will be out 2-4 weeks.
