Breakout IDPs for 2022

With the preseason in the rearview, we’ve reached peak draft season. Who are some players to target as 2022 breakout IDPs?

Next time we sit down to watch a live football game on TV, it’ll be the Bills and Rams for opening night just a short time from now. This last little stretch is a common time for most fantasy drafts. These guys are all starting caliber IDP players, that I believe could experience a big-time 2022 breakout IDPs and help win you a title. All of these guys are likely to go much higher in 2023 drafts.

Linebackers

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Cleveland Browns

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is a breakout waiting to happen. As a rookie, he played in just seven games where he saw at least 75% of snaps. In those games, he averaged seven total tackles per game, tallied two half-sacks, and forced two fumbles. Nothing elite but fantastic for a guy who turned 22 mid-season. With a little better luck in the injury department, watch him fly all over the field and up draft boards.

T.J. Edwards, Philadelphia Eagles

T.J. Edwards already had a mini-breakout in 2021, but clearly, the offseason has people afraid. He was a starting asset for IDP squads once locking down a full-time role. The Eagles added Kyzir White on a one-year deal and drafted Nakobe Dean in the 3rd round of the draft. Those two are battling to be the WILL LB though, Edwards is staying on the field and calling plays. He should easily beat his ADP.

Defensive Backs

Jalen Thompson, Arizona Cardinals

Care to guess which Cardinals safety was the higher scoring asset last season? Now which one has a higher ADP? The answers aren’t the same, but maybe they should be. Jalen Thompson has the more valuable role, one that allowed him to rack up 121 combined tackles in 2021. Thompson played more box safety and slot corner than teammate Budda Baker, and less free safety. I know which I’d prefer.

Brandon Jones, Miami Dolphins

Brandon Jones wasn’t a full time player for Miami in 2021, but look for that to change in 2022. With Byron Jones starting on the PUP list, Eric Rowe may kick out to CB and allow Jones to show what he can do. On just under 650 snaps, Jones racked up 79 combined tackles, equivalent pace to Jalen Thompson. He also lined up nearly 65% of the time in the box, elite usage levels. Sign me up for that.

Defensive Linemen

Greg Rousseau, Buffalo Bills

I hit on Greg Rousseau a bit more in my IDP waiver article but am expecting big things from the second year edge rusher. By PFF’s metrics, Rousseau was the best pass rusher as a rookie, ranking first in a metric combining sacks, hurries, and QB hits. He also was elite against the run, ranking first in stop percentage. Oh and now some dude named Von Miller is playing opposite him? Rousseau to the moon!

Odafe Oweh, Baltimore Ravens

Odafe Oweh was eased into action in 2021 but should see more playing time this year. He was solid both against the run and pass, though he was mostly used in more obvious passing downs, only playing the run about 25 percent of snaps. Oweh was third among rookies in PFFs pass rush grading. Despite limited playing time, he was also fourth against the run. Get him on the field more, and watch him wreak havoc.
