“Last year, New York Giants star wide receiver Malik Nabers requested the No. 1 jersey. A number previously worn by HOF Ray Flaherty. This year’s 1st round pick was edge rusher Abdul Carter from Penn State. Carter had requested to don the legendary No. 56 jersey. Is this new trend of requesting retired jersey numbers one that oversteps boundaries?”
The future of the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft is looking bright. Malik Nabers is one of the few bright spots that emerged from this miserable Big Blue 3-14 season. In addition to a number of highlight plays, he became the first Giants player to wear No. 1 since 1935. The team took this number out of circulation after Ray Flaherty retired following that season. It was the very first jersey number retired in professional football. The request for the No. 1 jersey was made by Nabers and approved by the Flaherty family.
The request may have been innocent, but a new trend may have emerged: highly touted rookies requesting the jersey numbers that have been retired by an organization. Shortly after being selected as the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, Abdul Carter requested to don No. 56. The legendary jersey number is retired in honor of Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor.
The first request can be viewed as cute, but comparing yourself to the most outstanding defensive football player of all time is overstepping a sacred football boundary. It is obnoxious! It is so obnoxious that we love it!

Abdul Carter Obnoxious Request
Lawrence Taylor is one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history. During his 13-year tenure with the Giants, he made No. 56 synonymous with excellence. His accolades include two Super Bowl titles, an MVP award, and a legacy that redefined the linebacker position. The Giants retired his number in 1994, cementing its sacred status within the franchise.
Abul Carter expressed a desire to wear No. 56, aiming to pay homage to Taylor and continue the legacy. However, Taylor respectfully declined the request, emphasizing the importance of forging one’s own path. “He has to be the player that he is. He can’t be another Lawrence Taylor,” Taylor remarked.
Sports media creators like Mike Francesa led the critique of the request by calling it a joke.
An Obnoxious Request So Outrageous That We Love IT
Say what you want about Abdul Carter’s request — it was bold, unapologetic, and maybe even arrogant. But after a 2024 season that can only be described as catastrophic, maybe the Giants needed a bit of arrogance.
Before the 2025 NFL Draft, you couldn’t find any reviews projecting the Giants to win more than four games. Sportsbooks had written them off. But Carter’s arrival and the buzz surrounding his personality and potential are beginning to change perceptions. Sports bettors are now looking for value in teams with upside, and Carter’s addition gives the Giants just that.
In the broader sports landscape, moments like these don’t just shake up locker rooms — they shift odds. Sportsbooks constantly recalibrate based on trades, rookies, and headlines like this one. That’s why staying up to date with expert-curated online betting reviews is crucial. These reviews break down the best platforms for odds, bonuses, and features tailored to NFL bettors. Whether you’re eyeing Carter as a Defensive Rookie of the Year contender or simply backing the Giants to exceed expectations, it pays to place informed bets through trusted sportsbooks.
Carter’s move may have rubbed some the wrong way, but it showed something the franchise has been lacking: guts. And when Taylor turned him down? Carter didn’t flinch. Instead, he doubled down, stating on social media that the worst LT could say was “no,” and the rejection would only fuel him more.
That kind of moxie stands out. No. 56 may stay in the rafters, but Carter’s fearless mindset is exactly what this team needs.
2025 New York Giants Defensive Identity
You heard directly from the Giants’ executive brass during last season’s TV show, Hard Knocks. When the decision was made to part ways with Saquon Barkley, the organization had no answers as to what its NFL identity would be. We now have an answer with a revamped defence consisting of Abdul Carter, Dexter Lawrence, Kevon Thibodeaux, and Brian Burns – an answer to getting after the opposition’s quarterback.
