The Washington Commanders have drafted a defensive player in the first round for five straight years from 2017-2021. They then used a second-round choice in 2022. It’s time for Jack Del Rio to deliver in his third year as defensive coordinator and here are the Buy/Sell from his defense.

Jamin Davis, Linebacker

The Washington Commanders selected Jamin Davis 19th overall in the 2021 NFL draft out of Kentucky. At six feet four inches tall and 232 lbs, he has the perfect size for an NFL linebacker. To go with the size, he ran a blistering 4.47 in the 40-yard dash and had a very nice 42-inch vertical jump.

As a rookie in 2021, Davis played in 16 games and started eight of them. He had two games where he played 90% or more of the defensive snaps. Davis had two games where he had 10 and 11 tackles, and neither of those games were his 90% snap games. He earned more play time as the season went on. Davis played just 23% to 56% of defensive snaps in his first six games. He only had three games of less than 56% of defensive snaps in his final 10 games.

In his limited action as a rookie, Davis still earned the #76 ranking in overall linebacker scoring in my leagues. He delivered 76 tackles (46 solo), three tackles for a loss, two QB hits, a sack, and one pass defended. As a junior for Kentucky, Davis averaged 10 tackles a game. He is the projected WILL linebacker starter for the 2022 Commanders defense. I see him doubling his rookie numbers to 150 tackles with 90 solo.

Davis is ranked #80 overall IDP on IDPGuys.com

The Commander’s second-year linebacker is set to be the steal of any draft in 2022. Davis will be a top 24 IDP player and might solidify your grasp on your 2022 league championship. Buy him now, before word gets out that he is valued way too low. Davis is already moving up in ADP according to IDPGuys.com, so don’t wait too long.

Sell

Chase Young, Defensive End

The Washington Commanders made Chase Young the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft. As a rookie, he only had 44 tackles (32 solo), 10 tackles for a loss, 12 QB hits, seven and a half sacks, four passes defended, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and a touchdown. He had less than three tackles a game in the 15 games he played as a rookie. He definitely looks the part to be a force for your fantasy football squad.

Looking a little closer at the individual games of his rookie season, Young was inconsistent with one huge week in week 14. That one week provided 20% of his entire year’s score. 11 of his 15 games produced two or fewer solo tackles. Young had seven games without even one QB hit. He only had five sacks in the final 12 games of his rookie season.

Young misses half of the 2021 Commanders season with a torn ACL.

The Commanders had high hope for their defense dominating games in 2021. Young was a huge part of their hopes, along with the other first-round picks of the previous five years. Their answer was a very disappointing ranking of 22nd in total yards allowed and 25th in points allowed. Young played the first half of the season and was not impressive at all. In his nine games, Young produced a paltry 26 tackles (15 solo), three tackles for a loss, four QB hits, one and a half sacks, two passes defended, and a couple of forced fumbles.

Young still has an ADP of #5 on the defensive line on IDPGuys.org and also has a dynasty ranking of number four in the defensive end list. What has he done that has him ranked this high other than getting drafted number two overall out of Ohio State? The ADP ranking says people still love him and have a tremendous value attached to his name. Sell him now and get multiple players and picks back in return. Go big with your offers and let them counter. Then smile all the way to the bank with that championship check.
