Sicoli’s Weekly Wrap: IDP quick hits

Not everything needs 200 words dedicated to it.
In 50 words or less, here’s a weekly wrap-up!

Colts pick up DE Kwity Paye’s 5th-year option

Sicoli’s Wrap: Some may have wondered about Paye after the first-round addition of Laiatu Latu, but Paye just had a career-high 52 tackles and 8.5 sacks. It’s been hard for the former first-round pick to break out in a steady Indianapolis rotation, but perhaps Latu could help open things up.

Fifth-year options declined for Eric Stokes, Payton Turner, Caleb Farley, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Zaven Collins

Sicoli’s Wrap: None of these are too surprising, hence why I’m grouping them up here. Collins saw his snaps slide under new head coach Jonathan Gannon. Tryon-Shoyinka has the greatest chance to earn a payday in the wake of Shaquil Barrett’s departure. Still, don’t bank on it.

Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs (ACL) expected to be healthy at training camp

Sicoli’s Wrap: Training camp isn’t until late July, and Diggs is in no rush to get healthy. He should be fine to draft in fantasy, at least if you’re concerned about health. He tore his ACL in September and should be ready for Week 1.

Bills sign LB Deion Jones, DE Dawuane Smoot

Sicoli’s Wrap: Jones enters a good situation, but one that won’t make a big difference in fantasy. He’s still comfortably behind Terrel Bernard and shouldn’t be expected to beat second-year Dorian Williams or veteran Nicholas Morrow.

Titans bring back DT Marlon Davidson

Sicoli’s Wrap: Davidson flamed out of Atlanta and spent most of 2023 on Tennessee’s practice squad. He’ll compete for a roster spot behind presumed starters in star Jeffrey Simmons and second-round pick T’Vondre Sweat.

Packers DC Jeff Hafley outlines promising role for second-round rookie S Javon Bullard

Sicoli’s Wrap: Bullard is expected to be the starter opposite Xavier McKinney, and Bullard might be the one to roster for fantasy. The Georgia rookie can slide into the slot. Bullard’s role closer to the line of scrimmage with McKinney being the high safety could be great for fantasy.

Georgia LB Dallas Turner emerges as DPOY favorite among sportsbooks

Sicoli’s Wrap: Fair enough. Sacks get awards, and Turner figures to chase many of those in a terrific defensive fit with Brian Flores. Expectations should always be tempered for rookies, but Turner has the best chance of the bunch to break through the rookie wall.

Why Titans LB Jack Gibbens could be the best breakout no one is talking about

About a year ago I called Robert Spillane’s 2023 breakout on this newsletter. While lightning rarely strikes twice, that won’t stop me from trying again!

So here’s another linebacker, this time with an opposite playstyle to Spillane; Jerome Baker, now of the Seattle Seahawks.

The Seahawks let both Jordyn Brooks and Bobby Wagner walk to greener pastures, with new head coach Mike MacDonald opting for outside signings in Jerome Baker and Tyrel Dodson. The duo compliments each other well, with Baker’s strength in pass coverage and Dodson’s strength in the run game.

While normally we IDP managers prefer the run-defender — and Dodson can have some big weeks — it’s Baker I’m interested in. The 2018 third-round pick doesn’t turn 28 until December and has always touted untapped potential in Miami. If anyone can get that potential out of him, it’s MacDonald who worked wonders with Patrick Queen in Baltimore, who struggled in years prior.

Baker had the best PFF grade of his career in 2024, with his agent Drew Rosenhaus saying Baker was released solely due to his ankle injury. His large cap hit could also have played a factor.

Neither expect to be a problem in 2024, as the contract is ironed out and the injury is in the past. MacDonald’s defense saw both Smith and Queen combine for 291 tackles, the most by a linebacker duo in the league in 2024. That opportunity is expected to translate with MacDonald taking over in Seattle where he’ll attempt to rebuild the modern-day Legion of Boom.

Baker should also hold green-dot responsibilities, something Dodson had limited experience with in Buffalo. Snaps equal opportunity, and opportunity equals fantasy points.

With a wide-open opportunity, Baker can have his best season yet with a fresh start in Seattle, not unlike Spillane getting his chance in Las Vegas.
