Sicoli’s Weekly Wrap: IDP quick hits

Not everything needs 200 words dedicated to it.
In 50 words or less, here’s a weekly wrap-up!

Panthers DT Derrick Brown signs $96 million deal over four years

Sicoli’s Wrap: The star defensive tackle had a career-high 103 combined tackles in 2023, plugging gaps and causing problems for offenses around the league. He’s most valuable in leagues with a DT option, though he’ll be hard-pressed to repeat 100+ tackles. The Auburn product turns 26 next week.

Giants curiously re-sign LB/DB Isaiah Simmons

Sicoli’s Wrap: Simmons seemed set for another fresh start, but it appears the market is just as dour on him as it was a year ago. The upside is always fun to think about, but Simmons has yet to show he can be trusted for an every-down role that yields fantasy production.

Colts bring back S Julian Blackmon on one-year deal worth up to $7.7 million

Sicoli’s Wrap: Blackmon enjoyed a solid fantasy season in 2023, boasting career highs in tackles (88), TFLs (5) and passes defended (8). The soon-to-be 26-year-old visited the 49ers and Bills, but ended up where he began. He should have streaming value with DB2 upside in Indianapolis.

Edge Kyle Van Noy returns to Baltimore on two-year, $9 million contract

Sicoli’s Wrap: Props to Van Noy, who continues to impress wherever he’s been since breaking out with the Patriots years ago. He had nine sacks in 14 games as a late signing in September. He should reprise the role that Jadeveon Clowney leaves behind and could have streaming value in deep formats.

Patriots work out mega $58 million extension with S Kyle Dugger

Sicoli’s Wrap: The contract has $8 million in incentives and $32.5 million in guarantees. After letting internal players walk in free agency under Bill Belichick, both Dugger and OT Mike Onwenu have inked major deals to stay. Dugger will have the same high upside, lower weekly floor role with the Patriots.

Chiefs re-sign DE Mike Danna to noteworthy three-year, $26 million deal

Sicoli’s Wrap: Danna enjoyed a strong 2023 season, even if the numbers aren’t top of the line. This is the first time under GM Brett Veach the team has re-signed a Veach draft pick to a multi-year deal. Danna will see a similar role opposite George Karlaftis. Check your waiver wires.

DE Randy Gregory looks to rebound in Tampa Bay

Sicoli’s Wrap: The former Cowboy and Bronco has struggled in recent years and has a one-year prove-it deal to bounce back. The Bucs let Shaq Barrett walk in free agency, so Gregory will take a rotational role that likely won’t yield fantasy production. It’s a nice upside play for Tampa Bay.

S Logan Ryan announces retirement

Sicoli’s Wrap: Ryan had plenty of solid streaming years with his versatility in the secondary, but injuries and a myriad of difficult circumstances always prevented Ryan from reaching his ceiling. Hope retirement treats him well.

Justin Simmons, Jamal Adams among top IDP free agents: Here’s where they could sign

Ryan Neal, S
2023 team: Buccaneers
2024 projected spot:
Neal had a good 2023 season, albeit with some hiccups in a struggling secondary, so it’s interesting that he is still without a contract. Neal can hold his own in the secondary, but he can play linebacker as well as most safeties.

With that in mind, why not Atlanta? The team could use another safety opposite Jessie Bates, and Neal would be an excellent compliment to the coverage ability of Richie Grant. With struggles at linebacker last season with Troy Andersen missing time, Neal would be an excellent fit with some fantasy potential.

Shaquille Leonard, LB
2023 team: Colts/Eagles
2024 projected spot: Bears

This is not a good landing spot for fantasy, but there aren’t many options for someone on the downturn as much as Leonard is. But there would be reasons to hope for a revival in Chicago.

The Bears employ LB coach Dave Borgonzi, who coached Leonard to his peak form from 2018-2021 before heading to Chicago when a new regime swept into Indianapolis. That familarity seems like Leonard’s best chance at a rebound at this point.

Justin Simmons, S
2023 team: Broncos
2024 projected spot: New Orleans

Can the Saints afford Simmons? That’s the big question given the leaps the front office has gone through to just become cap compliant. The team is at a crossroads, being half contender and yet a tough one to imagine going the difference.

Adding Simmons to start where Marcus Maye played a year ago would represent a massive upgrade as opposed to trusting Jordan Howden to make the next step. Simmons’ fantasy value would be sporadic, which isn’t too unusual after his time in Denver, but it would be a nice ball-hawking landing spot.

Jamal Adams, S
2023 team: Seahawks
2024 projected spot:
It’s been a long and difficult road for Adams since his blockbuster trade to Seattle, and now the era is over. Adams hits free agency and has yet to have many suitors, so where can he go?

How about Las Vegas? They could always use some help with run support, and it would allow for the team to experiment with more defensive packages than has been available in the past. Will Adams be a scheme fit for Antonio Pierce amid a cultural revolution? I’m not sure, but the fit on the football field would be a nice influx of talent.

Adoree Jackson, CB
2023 team: Giants
2024
projected spot: Giants

Jackson enjoyed a small revival with the Giants after struggling in Tennessee, but he had his worst season with New York in 2023. Now there’s a new defensive coordinator in Shane Bowen taking over with some curious ties since he was on the staff that drafted Jackson when Bowen was a linebacker coach with Tennessee. He became the defensive coordinator with the Titans in 2021, the same year Jackson left to sign with New York.

Let’s assume Jackson is out the door. Perhaps he stays within the division with the Eagles, who have a desperate need to bolster some depth in the secondary. The 2016 first-round pick said he wants to play for a contender, and Philadelphia would represent that with some option to have revenge games against the Giants.

Kwon Alexander, LB
2023 team: Steelers
2024
projected spot: Jets

Beggers can’t be choosers, and like Leonard, Alexander’s market is a bit down at the moment. The veteran LB tore his Achilles last season, a brutal development after he filled in admirably for the injured Cole Holcomb. He could very well return to Pittsburgh as well, but instead he takes a different return flight to New York.

The Jets have fortunately had some healthy linebackers in C.J. Mosley and Quincy Williams, but the depth behind both is quite thin for how important the role is. Alexander spent 2022 with the Jets and would be a solid depth piece if his recovery goes well.
